The Marian Speech Team is a nationally-recognized organization comprised of students who compete in public speaking and oral interpretation tournaments across the state of Nebraska and the greater Midwest region. Individuals that qualify may attend several national tournaments held during the summer throughout the United States. The Marian Speech Team is consistently ranked among the top in the nation by the National Speech & Debate Association. Students who compete on the speech team are enrolled in speech class through the English Department curriculum.
Marian Speech ranks among nation’s top 10 percent
For the fifth year in a row, Marian’s Speech Team earned significant recognition from The National Speech & Debate Association (NSDA) for placing in the top 10 percent of chapters nationwide. Marian achieved 100 degrees or more last year, ranking it among the top 10 percent in the nation in 2014 and earning membership in the prestigious “100 Club.” “Such a milestone is remarkable because it demonstrates outstanding commitment to teaching students essential life skills– including communication, research, listening, writing and organization,” said NSDA Executive Director J. Scott Wunn. Students earn points and degrees in the NSDA honor society based on competitive and service-related activities. Individual recognition ranges from Degrees of Merit with 25 or more points to the Degree of Premier Distinction with 1,500 or more points.
