Murals Inspire and Promote the Core Values

In 2019, Marian completed a building-wide renovation to create the optimal learning environment for girls. Built in 1955, the school had gone through multiple expansions, with each addition reflecting the style of the time. The result was a patchwork of different flooring and wood finishes – albeit homey and beloved by Marian students.
Working with Alley Poyner Machietto (APM) Architecture a new addition provided a state-of-the-art academic center, plaza and main entry, among other projects. Additionally, the renovation and addition posed an opportunity to envision an overall interior design for 48,500 square feet of classroom and communal space. The result was an environment with a nod to Marian’s original mid-century modern style – darker organic woods; unified flooring throughout; increased natural light and updated, energy-efficient task lighting – all within the unified Marian color palette of blue, gray, black and white.
Characterized for its clean, simple lines and honest use of materials, mid-century modern style generally does not include decorative embellishments. Marian-girl style, however, does embellish.
After living in the new spaces for a few years, the more expansive white spaces called for a splash of Marian style. An environmental signage plan was developed to bring color, youthful energy and inspiration to the blank canvases found in the hallways. Again with the help of APM Architecture, a series of core values icons were designed and elements of the icons were used in murals that represent each of the core values.
The colorful design, size and scale of the murals make a noticeable impact. Each mural also includes an inspirational quote from a Catholic saint or the Servants of Mary constitutions.
“They are big, bright and beautiful,” said Marian President Michele Romero Ernst of the murals. “We wanted something that would be a visual reminder of the mission and core values, and you can’t help but be inspired by the affirmation they convey.”
The first mural debuted in the link between senior hallway and the upper quad as a welcome to all who enter the academic side of the building. Additional murals have been incrementally added with another installation scheduled for this summer. By the start of the school year, there will be 11 murals sprinkled throughout the building.
Going forward, the murals will continue to be a source of inspiration for the Marian community.
