Marian celebrated its annual May Crowning on May 2. A long-standing Marian tradition, May Crowning brings the school together to honor and reflect on Mary as a role model.
This year’s May Queen is senior Amber Johanek. She was chosen by her classmates as one who embodies the core value of Marian identity. Like Mary, Amber inspires the Marian community to follow the example of Jesus. She courageously stands up for what is right; says “yes” to what God asks of her; works for social justice; offers a compassionate presence to those she encounters; serves as a trusted friend and companion; and lives her life with hope, joy and thankfulness.
In her address to the students and faculty, Amber shared how her faith was tested in the face of personal tragedy. Through her commitment to prayer and devotion to Mary, Amber experienced profound hope.
“During the most difficult time in my life, Mary was always with me. I know this because God blessed me with the most beautiful group of friends to lift me out of my darkness. This group of women inspires me every day and allows me to be the best version of myself,” said Amber.
Amber is an outstanding and engaged student. In addition to May Queen, she was also nominated as a prom princess. She participates in the cheer team, Campus Ministry FIAT team and yearbook. Amber is a member of the National Honor Society and the National English Honor Society. Every summer she volunteers at Vacation Bible School in her parish.
Second-grade daughters and granddaughters of Marian alumnae also took part in the ceremony. More than 30 girls, who received their First Holy Communion this year, processed with Amber and placed a rose at the foot of the statue of Mary, symbolizing their blossoming faith. For the second-graders and their mothers, grandmothers and aunts, the ceremony concluded with cookies and lemonade and tours of Marian.
Amber is the daughter of Jennifer and Patrick Johanek. In the fall, she will attend the University of Nebraska - Omaha to study pre-occupational therapy.
