Kicking off the year with a fiery routine, Momentum, Marian’s Show Choir, performed at their showcase on Jan. 12. Their theme for the 2024-2025 season is “Fire and Ice” and features songs such as “Wildfire” by Rayelle, “Set Fire To The Rain” by Adele and “Rain On Me” by Ariana Grande and Lady Gaga.

“I really like the theme. I think the outfits are really cute and the theme is pretty unique,” said senior Heidi Hans, a fourth-year member and a dance captain for the team. This season’s outfits feature a red and gold dress to signify fire before a quick change allows them to switch into a glittery half-white and blue outfit that represents ice.

Their 15-minute routine is a collection of months of hard work in preparation for the competitions that start in the wintertime. “We initially start with just the music and learn how to sing all of it. And then usually during the end of August or beginning of September is when we start learning our dances,” Hans said.

With her role as a dance captain, Hans helps teach her fellow members parts of the choreography. “Sometimes I sit in the audience and watch and correct people’s moves. We’re kind of the people in charge of making sure our choreography looks neat and clean,” Hans said.

Between hours of practicing singing and dancing, Hans is ready to put the hardest part of the season behind her. “Learning all the dances and putting them all together has to be the most difficult part because it’s a lot more tiring than you think it’s going to be. It’s very excruciating to learn all the dances back to back and to try to keep them all in your head,” Hans said.

The showcase signals the time for competitions to begin, with the members of the show choir dedicating an entire day to a competition.

“All-girl groups go in the beginning, early in the day…we’re there the entire day because awards are at five or six. So it’s a bit of a long day, but it’s fun to watch other groups. Show choir competitions are really fun because you get to see all the groups with crazy stuff and amazing dancers,” Hans said.

Now that her last season is beginning, Hans looks forward to competing against other schools and watching their performances. “Competition season is so much fun because it feels like our work paid off.”

On Feb. 2, the team placed second in the Treble Division at the Westside Competition of Excellence. Followed by a fifth place finish at the Papillion La Vista South Titan Show Choir Competition, Feb. 9.
