Culture Day at Marian

Marian came alive with color, movement and meaningful connection during Culture Day, an event thoughtfully organized by our Board of Belonging. Designed to celebrate the diverse backgrounds and experiences within our community, the day invited our students to explore, learn and engage with cultures in ways that were both interactive and reflective.
Throughout the building, each space offered a unique opportunity to experience culture not just as something to observe, but something to participate in.
In the cafeteria, students slowed down and immersed themselves in the intricate beauty of Rangoli-inspired art. Led by art teacher Anne Thompset, the activity introduced students to the traditional Indian practice through peel-and-reveal mandala designs and vibrant colored sand. As students layered patterns and colors, they experienced how art can serve as both a creative outlet and a form of cultural storytelling—rooted in meaning, patience and intention.
Out in the quad, the energy shifted to a lively and competitive atmosphere with Cultural Kahoot Trivia. Students gathered to test their knowledge, learn new facts and celebrate global traditions in a fun, collaborative setting. It was a fun reminder that learning about one another can be both joyful and impactful.
The West Gym transformed into a cultural showcase, highlighting the rich diversity within our Marian community. Students curated displays representing their heritage, sharing artifacts, traditional clothing, customs and personal stories. The exhibit created space for dialogue, understanding and appreciation, giving students the chance to both teach and learn from one another in meaningful ways.
Meanwhile, the East Gym pulsed with rhythm and movement during a line dancing experience led by choreographer Monica McSwain. Students learned “Boots on the Ground,” stepping into a tradition deeply rooted in African and Black communities. More than just learning choreography, the experience highlighted dance as a powerful form of collective expression, storytelling and joy as it demonstrated how culture lives and evolves through shared experiences.
Culture Day at Marian was more than a series of activities, it was a reflection of who we are. Through art, movement, storytelling and shared learning, students were reminded of the beauty in our differences and the strength in our unity. Guided by the leadership of the Board of Belonging, the day embodied Marian’s commitment to fostering a community where every voice is valued and every story matters.
