Five Seniors Receive Prestigious Creighton University Grit Scholarship

Five Seniors Receive Prestigious Creighton University Grit Scholarship
Aseret Baca

Five of our seniors are taking their next steps after high school with purpose!

Kate Efaw, Maura Harrington, Caitlyn Smith, Kelsey Herrera and Nora Farnham have each been named recipients of the prestigious Grit Scholarship from Creighton University — an honor that recognizes not only academic achievement, but resilience, determination and heart.

Funded by the Charles and Mary Heider Family Foundation, the Grit Scholarship is a full-tuition award designed to help students unlock their potential and grow into the leaders they are meant to be. It celebrates those who have demonstrated perseverance in the face of adversity and a commitment to making a difference in the world.

There is no doubt these five young women embody that spirit here at Marian. From aspirations in different career paths, Kate, Maura, Caitlyn, Kelsey and Nora have already begun shaping their futures with purpose. Through their time at Marian, they have shown what it means to lead with compassion, courage and conviction, all qualities that will continue to define them as Grit Scholars.

The impact of this scholarship reaches far beyond financial support. At Creighton, Grit Scholars are empowered to grow into bold changemakers, using their education to serve others and leave a lasting mark on their communities. The Grit Scholarship is also part of Forward Blue campaign, Creighton’s ongoing fundraising initiative, where scholarships remain the top priority. Since its launch, donors have created 472 new scholarships, opening doors for more than 6,500 students and counting.

This highly selective award process takes place during students’ senior year and identifies individuals who exemplify “grit,” a unique blend of passion and perseverance. Often supporting first-generation college students and those who have overcome significant challenges, the scholarship is a testament to both achievement and character.

For our staff & faculty, this moment is one of pride and celebration — it's a big deal!

These five students are not only continuing their journeys at Creighton, but they are carrying forward Marian’s mission to lead, serve and inspire. And with the support of the Grit Scholarship behind them, their futures are brighter than ever. Congratulations!
