Marian journalism students brought home both awards and new knowledge from the Nebraska High School Press Association Fall Convention at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln on Oct. 21.
Four of Marian’s publications from the 2018-2019 school year were up for critique. Three of these four received Cornhusker Awards, the highest honor they can receive at the convention.
The Network newspaper earned a Cornhusker with special recognition for staff editorials and photo essays. The M-Beat Broadcast earned a Cornhusker with special recognition for teacher involvement and creative transitions. The Online Network newspaper earned a Cornhusker with special recognition for in-depth coverage.
The Crusader yearbook came home with a Superior Certificate with special recognition for its “In The Zone” theme concept.
Outside of the awards ceremony, students listened to the keynote speaker, an investigative reporter from the Texas Observer magazine and a UNL School of Journalism graduate. They also attended multiple “breakout” sessions where they learned about topics ranging from fighting fake news to video storytelling to podcasting.
The journalism students who attended the convention were Jess Brusnahan, Naomi Delkamiller, Rylee Gregg, Megan Hoppe, Gaea Kaan, Margaret Kelly and Daisy Owen. They travelled to Lincoln with student journalists from Omaha North.
