Sophomore Melina Piperis has been awarded a $1,000 scholarship from the Washington Oxi Day Foundation, which provides scholarships for Greek-American students who best embody the Greek concept of “philotimo.”

Piperis received one of two second-place scholarships for her essay on how “philotimo” is present in her life.

“She is an excellent writer, so I’m glad that the Foundation also recognized her skills,” English and journalism teacher Marsha Kalkowski said.

According to the Washington Oxi Day Foundation, “philotimo” cannot be directly translated to English. Rather, it is a complex set of Greek values including honor, humility, empathy and putting others before the self.

Coincidentally, Marian’s softball team is also using “philotimo” as it’s motivational slogan this season.
