is a single mom with three children. In August of 2008, her son, Michael, then 10, was diagnosed with Inflammatory Myofibroblastic Tumor, an extremely rare (only 5 other children in the US have this type of tumor) and inoperable tumor in his right shoulder. Michael has undergone multiple tests and has had 28 weeks of chemo. The tumor did not respond to chemo or radiation so the only hope is in a clinical trial at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. On a monthly basis, Kathy and Michael travel to get medicine, labs, tests and scans. Since he started the trial in October 2009, the tumor has shrunk 30 percent. With the continued success of this clinical trial, the next option will be surgery to remove the tumor at Sloan-Kettering in New York with months of physical therapy after that.
